"We were questioned by researchers from a research institute in order to make masks in the shape of" honeycomb "grids for them as part of one of their research projects.
The researchers asked us to determine the minimum thickness of both the thickness of the grids and the walls of the strands of the honeycomb while being able to guarantee the good behavior of the geometry of the part from a first drawing. that they transmitted to us:
We therefore decided to launch a research and development campaign to determine the minimum thicknesses that we could machine with this geometry and to propose to the researchers of the institute the best technical solution according to their requirements.

 

We articulated our study in different successive phases:  

  • Preliminary technical study:  
    During this first phase, we determined in collaboration with the researchers of the institute the different models of masks that we were going to test according to what we thought would be achievable a priori and the mechanical and technical requirements of researchers in the part of their project. We determined together that the minimum machinable thickness for the grids was 0.05 mm in stainless steel 301 and that the minimum thickness of the strands would be 0.05 mm in order to be able to guarantee the good behavior of the geometry of the Honeycomb.  
  • Search for Laser settings:   Once the different models of masks were determined, we carried out a search for settings that would allow us to make these masks as best as possible to meet the requirements of the specifications.  
  • Laser cutting tests:   So we then performed the cutting tests according to the parameters that we had predetermined. We were able to refine these settings after checking the first tests.  
  • Prototypes production:   The researchers therefore designed a mask that met their specifications based on the data transmitted.
    We then produced 4 versions of these prototype masks so that they can integrate them into their study. "
